This page contains instructions for setting up how you will accept payments for your Swell store.

Creating a test payment

Test payments allow you to test whether or not credit cards and the checkout process are working properly on your store.

Step 1: Choose the test payment option

Click “Edit settings” under the credit card area and select “Test gateway” before saving.

Step 2: Checkout as normal

Add a product to cart and visit the checkout as a customer normally would. Enter the card number “4242 4242 4242 4242” in order to test if the process works as intended.

Nothing will be charged to you or Swell during a test.

Activating PayPal

PayPal is a free merchant and gateway that you can integrate with your Swell store to accept payments.

You can begin accepting PayPal on your store by clicking the blue “Activate” button under alternative payments.

This will prompt a popup that will direct you to authorize your PayPal account.

Once your PayPal account is authorized, customers will be able to select PayPal during checkout.

Activating Braintree

Braintree is a division of PayPal that specializes in mobile and web payment systems for e-commerce companies. It makes it easy to accept payments on your Swell store. Braintree is available for merchants in the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong SAR China, Malaysia, and New Zealand.

Please visit Braintree for more information.

In order to allow Braintree to process payments for your store, all you need to do is head to Payment Settings, enable Braintree, and input your Merchant information and Key.

Activating Amazon Pay

Amazon Pay is Amazon’s free payment gateway and it can be added to your Swell store to offer additional payment methods.

You can begin connecting your Amazon Pay account to Swell by selecting “Activate” under the alternative methods section.

Activating Affirm

Affirm is a loan company that allows customers to buy goods or services offered by online merchants and pay off those purchases in fixed monthly payments. Affirm does not charge late fees, prepayment fees, or service fees.

How to implement Affirm with your Swell store

Step 1: Create a merchant account with Affirm (https://docs.affirm.com/Integrate_Affirm/Direct_API/Account_Setup)

Step 2: Once you generate your API Keys, head to your Swell store Payment Settings and click Edit Settings.

Step 3: Add your API Keys from Affirm and select Save

Adding manual payment methods

Sometimes a customer may only be able to pay via a manual method, such as COD (cash on delivery) or a bank deposit. These methods can be enabled under the manual payments section by clicking “Add manual payment method.”

Choose a method from the dropdown menu and complete each field. The short description appears on the checkout page and payment instructions are sent to customers on the receipt page.

Chargebacks and fraud prevention

Swell has built-in features to help prevent chargeback fraud and similar issues.

We highly recommend that you keep the “Require payment authorization” option enabled at the bottom of the page. This ensures that payments which are not authorized by the chosen gateway will be rejected.

You can also disable “Auto-capture payments” to manually review every order. If there are suspicious orders, you have the option to safely reject orders. An example of this would be if a zip code doesn't match the billing and shipping address of the customer.

Gift cards and account credit

Gift cards and account credits can be enabled or disabled from the middle of the payment settings page. Simply click the enable button beside either option to toggle them.
